Cars need a ton of maintenance to keep running smoothly. With well over 1 million UK buyers a year now pre-checking cars before buying make sure you don't get caught out or stuck with someone else's problem, 1 in 3 have some form of hidden history so for the sake of a few pounds don't run the risk of losing your money, your sleep or even your life if you buy a deathtrap.

We decided to check out some of the most common mileage milestones and explain why they're actually needed (along with how often) so you can keep your car running smoothly without spending more than you have to. CARFAX collects mileage information for millions of cars, and can warn you for possible mileage inconsistencies.

A large chunk of your car's maintenance is preventative and regardless of your skill level pretty much anyone who can lift a hood can check the fluids.

A motorist who bought a car which had clocked more than twice the mileage shown on its odometer took the seller to court and won. If you do not see any tire damage and cannot identify the source of the vibration, take the vehicle to a tire dealer for a thorough inspection.

The lifespan and mileage of a tire depends of a combination of factors: its design, the driver's habits, the climate, the road conditions and the care that's put into the tires. Such cars are not actual CPO vehicles. Last year, there were 72,000 official complaints to Consumer Direct about issues with second hand cars.

This data provides you with information, collected from the time of first registration in Poland, among other technical data of the vehicle, the date of last technical inspections and the date of valid insurance, the latest reading of the odometer as well as information about the previous owners and whether the vehicle has not been reported as stolen.

Not every vehicle that has a rough interior and low miles is a case of a rolled-back odometer. If you notice vibrations or other disturbances while driving, immediately reduce speed, drive with caution until you can safely pull off the road and stop, and inspect your tires.

By definition that means comparatively lower fuel efficiency than for standard tires since more grip often means more rolling resistance and more effort needed from the engine to move the car forward. You can do this by checking the brake fluid reservoir on the driver side of your car.

If the car was used in a city for quick errands, the wear on the brakes and tires will differ greatly from a car that was used to drive long distances. The government website reveals the car's mileage and mileage intervals between check-ups, which will go some way to highlight whether the seller is trying to hide something.

If you state you're going to be driving 20,000 miles a year, you're obviously going to depreciate the car quicker than someone who will only be doing 5,000, and so you'll incur more charges. If our checks do not reveal any data on your vehicle there is no charge.

Car clocking is also common concern for used car buyers and a recent story by Sunday Times highlighted that 8 in 10 returned lease cars had their mileage tampered with following a spot check carried out by Steve Jackson, chief car editor at Glass's, a vehicle information company.

You may have heard different things from car dealerships and from other people, but if you change your mileage issues oil every 3,000 miles you'll be good to go. They are making cars that can go longer without an oil change, but we still recommend that you change it every 3,000 miles anyway.
